The tally reads like a fever chart: seventeen separate maulings absorbed in a single sitting, one of them an eleven-hit ordeal that should have ended things then and there but somehow didn't. Zero kills to his name, which is not an insult so much as an observation: a man this thoroughly occupied by being bitten never had the leisure to bite back.
